In addition, a variety of drugs have been specifically designed to migraine treatment. Medications used to combat migraines fall into two broad categories. They include:
Preventive medications: These medications often help in reducing the frequency, severity and length of migraines as well as increase the effectiveness of symptom-relieving medicines. Preventive medications are generally recommended for daily use, or when a predictable trigger like menstruation is approaching. Some preventive medications include:
Cardiovascular drugs: Beta blockers commonly used to treat high blood pressure and coronary artery disease can reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. These drugs are generally considered as the first line of treatment. Calcium channel blockers another class of cardiovascular drugs, may also be helpful. In addition, antihypertensive medications are useful in preventing migraines Antidepressants: Certain antidepressants can effectively prevent all types of headaches, including migraines. These medications reduce migraines by affecting the level of serotonin and other brain chemicals. Anti-seizure drugs: Although the reason is unclear, some anti-seizure drugs, seem to prevent migraines. In high doses, however, these anti-seizure drugs can cause side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, hair loss and dizziness. Cyproheptadine: This antihistamine specifically affects serotonin activity. Doctors sometimes give it to children as a preventive measure. Botulinum toxin type A (Botox): People receiving Botox injections for facial wrinkles have noted improvement in their headaches. Although the mechanism itself is unclear, the drug may cause changes in the nervous system that modifies the body's tendency to develop migraines. We had at first written a rough assignment on Prevent Migraines. Then after a few improvisions and enhancements here and there, we have ended up with this end product.
Pain-relieving medications: Also known as acute or abortive treatment, these drugs when taken during migraine attacks, can stop the symptoms that have already begun. Preventive medications: These drugs are almost always meant to be taken regularly, on a daily basis, to help reduce the severity or frequency of migraine headaches.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These medications help relieve pain. NSAIDs must not be taken for a long period of time or else it may lead to ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding and rebound headaches. Triptans: For severe migraine attacks, Triptans are the drug of choice. They effectively relieve migraine associated pain and nausea as well as sensitivity to light and sound. Side effects of triptans include nausea, dizziness, muscle weakness and, rarely, stroke and heart attack. Ergots: Ergotamine, a common prescription for migraine, was in use long before triptans were introduced. Anti-nausea medications: Since migraine attacks are often accompanied by nausea with or without vomiting, medication for nausea is appropriate and is usually combined with other medications. Butalbital combinations: These medication combinations are sometimes used to treat migraine attacks. These medications, however, have a high risk of rebound headache and withdrawal symptoms and must therefore be used infrequently. Opiates: Medications containing narcotics, particularly codeine, are sometimes used to treat migraine pain in people who cannot take triptans or ergots. These drugs are habit-forming and must be used only as a last resort.
Pain-relieving medications: These drugs must be taken as soon as the signs or symptoms of a migraine are experienced. Sleeping or resting in a dark room may also help. These drugs are:

My mom is always suffering from the pain caused by her migraine. Are there any ways to at least relief the pain besides tablets? She always drinks them but they don't always work. Any idea would help.

There are many different treatments for migraine. The most important thing to realize is that migraine is a disease and can actually be fatal. Your mom should talk to her doctor and get a referal to a nuerologist. They can come up with a treatment plan and go from there.
Always remember, any migraine that lasts over 72 hours is considered an emergency and you can have a stroke, so if her migraine lasts longer than that she HAS to go to the ER.
Good luck and best wishes for your mom.
Also it is great that you are concerned and asking for help for her, many family members of people who suffer from migraines do not understand.

Don't confuse headaches with migraines. If your mother has been diagnosed by a doctor with migraine, then pain medications have also been discussed. If hers isn't working, she needs to report this to her doctor. If she hasn't been diagnosed (self-diagnosing doesn't count), then she needs to have her headaches evaluated.
The best cure I've found for a migraine is this: Take one Excedrin (the kind for migraines), and drink a can of Coca-Cola. It felt like my head popped, and all of the pain was gone. Every other time I've had a migraine, I've landed in the ER.

Clusters headaches are said to be the worst headaches a person can suffer. People who have these headaches will tell you that the pain is much worse than a migraine. Researchers report that people who have suffered cluster headaches and other intense pain, like childbirth or migraines, say that these headaches are definitely the worst pain a person could ever experience.

You have severe, debilitating headaches that cause you to vomit and huddle in a dark room for hours waiting for them to go away. Chances are they are migraines. The only way to know for sure, and start on the path to managing your condition if they are migraines, is to be properly diagnosed.
The first step should always be your regular doctor. One out of every eight people suffers...
Fridays are usually, if not the most anticipated day of the week for students and working people. It's the last day of the week which means a halt from your books, from your computer, from the never ending meetings and away from your professors or your bosses. Friday nights can simply mean fun, fun, fun! For some, fun means going out with friends, eating out in a fancy restaurant, partying all...
Migraine Headache Treatment Migraine headaches are described as being of a recurrent nature. They are characterized by certain symptoms that precede the actual onset of the headache. Further to the article in 'Frontline' and in reference to the approach I have developed it is important to clarify that whilst my approach does include a series of techniques which restore movement and maintain natural posture of the upper cervical spine, and whilst they are powerful, they are a small part of what I have developed.
My clinical experience of over 13000 hours with headache and...
